How To Create a Business Based On Your Crochet Knowledge!

An introduction to Crochet Pattern Editing (known in the biz as Tech Editing)

An Online Workshop To Help Those Who Love To Crochet

Learn how to tech edit crochet patterns so you can turn your crochet knowledge into a profitable business.

This workshop is designed to help you get crystal clear on what a tech editor does and whether it is for you.

We will be covering some of the maths involved when you are checking whether a pattern is correct, and I will show you how to tech edit a simple pattern. By the end of our time together, you’ll have a much clearer idea of what tech editing is and be ready to go on to learn more, so you can finally stop thinking about starting that crochet business and actually start doing - by landing clients, making money, and living that freelancer life!

Wouldn't you love to set your own working hours, work from home and create your own schedule based around CROCHET – that thing that is 'just a little hobby' 😊 !!!!!

Do you ever wish you could make a profitable career out of crochet?

Maybe you have already tried to earn money from your crochet passion using some of the 'traditional' ways such as  .......................

Designing and selling your own patterns
Undertaking crochet commissions
Getting patterns published in magazines
Writing a blog
Making instructional videos on YouTube
Teaching crochet workshops

Well my friend, I am going to let you in on a secret! THERE IS ANOTHER WAY...

Now don't get me wrong. Many people have created very successful businesses in these areas but I know that none of these quite worked for me - and I have tried most of them.

Do you feel the same way?

If you're new to me... nice to meet you! My name is Carol Ibbetson, and I'm a leading pattern editor in the knitting and crochet world.

I have the honour of editing for some of the top names in the industry, including yarn companies such as RowanStylecraft and Sirdar, magazines such as Simply Crochet, numerous books - you can see some of these below - and let's not forget the many lovely independent designers such as Lillibjorncrochet.com I have worked for along the way.  You may also have seen me teaching on Yarn Lane TV.

How did I get here?

It was only when I was working on a blanket for a particular yarn company and found mistakes in the pattern (which I pointed out to them), that I first came across the term 'tech editor' .
'Oh thanks so much' they said, 'We have been looking for a crochet tech editor for all the patterns in this book but we are having difficulty finding one... do you know any?'

Woah -  LIGHTBULB moment.........

I found out the basics of what a tech editor does and thought to myself 'I really could do that - this is what I have been looking for!'
I did some more research and found that there was nobody out there who could really teach me about tech editing. So I decided to contact the yarn company and after a long chat with them we agreed that I would do some sample edits for them for free and if they were happy they would use me as a tech editor for this initial small publication.

THAT WAS IT... I was off ... but not yet running !
The rate was small initially and believe me when I say there was not much help available at that time, but despite that, I knew it was something I could do well.  As I improved and got more confident, I secured more clients and after a long, steep learning curve I had created the business I always wanted.

Fast forward a few years...
I ditched my 9-5 in the IT industry and am now fully employed with my tech editing and training business and I have not looked back since.

Remember when I said there was not much help available when I started out.
Well that is about to change for you.....

What if you could dip your toes into the tech editing world to see if you like it?

Here are three questions I often get asked....

  • Do you need to be good at maths? Well, the answer is you have to be happy using arithmetic, but remember - this is not an exam - you are allowed to use calculators!
  • Do you have to crochet each item? To which the answer is a definite no. A pattern tester crochets the item. A tech editor checks the pattern with a fine tooth comb to make sure it is correct, consistent, clear, concise, complete and in-style.
  • Wow - that sounds fantastic - but don't you have to be super advanced in crochet to do that? The answer to that question may surprise you. Think about it - just as there are different levels of complexity in crochet so there are different levels of complexity in patterns! It stands to reason right? Many tech editors like to concentrate on the simpler items which is absolutely fine! You are in control of the work you take on as a tech editor and so you decide what level you want to work at in terms of pattern difficulty.

Sad that it is over but super excited for the months ahead...

Thank you so much Carol & Paula for the great course! It was packed with info and I find myself going back to the replays several times.

Sad that it is over but super excited for the months ahead. And if being honest, a little scared!

What Our Students Say

I wanted to do something with crochet editing

Karen Hubbard

Enjoy the last session everyone and thank you Carol and Paula it's been fab. Around six years ago, I mentioned to a colleague that I wanted to do something with crochet editing, so it's taken me a while to get here, but they say things will find you at the right time. So hopefully, I'll have some exciting times ahead with all of you.

Thank you for hosting a wonderful course

Jacky Kirk

Sorry guys, x. I'm going to miss the last live, but I just wanted to say thank you to you all especially Carol and Paula for hosting a wonderful course. I've learned lots. I've still got homework assignments to do but hopefully, get them done over the next few weeks.

Inspired me to venture into the world of tech editing.

Mandy Challis

The course has not only inspired me to venture into the world of tech editing, but to create my own designs and also start writing a book on C2C. Just wish I didn't have to fit this all around a full-time job, whilst everything establishes.

Calculating and counting stitches in your dreams.

Heili Nellis

I think seeing yourself calculating and counting stitches in your dreams, more than a few nights in a row speaks volumes about the impact of the course.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the course

Jenny Nuttall

Thank you so much, Carol and Paula. I have thoroughly enjoyed the course too! Can't wait to get started.

I just found an error in a published book. #freshperspective

Kate Jacques

I just found an error in a published book of crochet patterns. Usually, I'd be irritated...I am feeling, well, kinda thrilled. Is this my life now? #freshperspective

I'm so excited for the future ahead

Megan Wilding
